Namibia Pulls Down Colonial Statue to Mark African Liberation

The controversial statue of a German colonial commander that had been erected in Windhoek to commemorate the centenary of the city’s establishment has been taken down by Namibian authorities. The monument honoring a man who directed German forces in a murder of native people was petitioned to be taken down, while detractors contest the claim that Germans created the city.

Numerous Namibians rejoiced when Curt von Francois’ monument, which had been placed on a pedestal in front of municipal buildings for more than 50 years, was taken down on Wednesday.
